We have tried out some classes at the Yoga Tree, a chain with several branches in the city, but the quality varied greatly depending on the instructor.

Tonight, we went to a yoga class at our gym in the Marina. While in the downward dog position, we secretly scoped out our fellow yogis - the many blonde girls in tight pants and even several cute boys (could they possibly have been straight?). If we are in a relationship, we resent the pressure to be romantic, and the inevitable disappointments from a partner who does not try hard enough. If we are single, the holiday makes us feel like a solitary wolf.

Stepping out into the streets of San Francisco on February 14, our senses were overwhelmed by the many happy couples strolling around, the flowers and balloons being carried by passers-by (singletons appeared to have stayed home). Such a scene is easily avoided in the suburbs, where no one walks on the streets.

That evening we had dinner at a restaurant that only served a pre-set menu, had romantic live music, and giant red fluffy hearts as decoration hanging from its walls. Our unease was soothed by a beautiful bouquet of flowers we received.

Are there any dog-friendly cafes left in this city?

We love coffee, but we also love to take along our beautiful dog Lola along wherever we go. This year our grandparents are visiting from Bosnia and we get to spend the holidays with them for the first time in years. Even though they celebrate Eastern Orthodox Christmas on January 7, we also threw a celebration for this Christmas. We ate a lot, and watched Christmas movies. Grandma nodded and laughed at appropriate intervals during the movies, even though she does not understand English. Our little Lolita also embraced the festive spirit, wearing her beautiful Santa outfit that perfectly matched her black and white hair.

San Francisco - the city we call home (for now)

The twins have long been back from their travels and are now settled into their respective SF neighborhoods. It is therefore fortunate that San Francisco has many many coffee shops. But a mere run to Starbucks is condemned as a grave ethical failing by some inhabitants of this city. San Francisco's many neighborhoods are filled with niche cafes that boast sophisticated organic, shade-grown, micro-roast single brews. Some places even refuse to provide fake sugars such as Equal and Splenda, offering instead only brown sugar. Ever averse to any extra calories that could instead be alloted to nice chocolates, we have resorted to bringing our own Splenda when we visit such places!

Parking in SF is harder than scoring a straight man in the Castro

Parking in SF is a skill you will never perfect. However, their behavior varies by neighborhood. In the Castro, few men are interested in women. Since their jobs are often in the tech industry, men of San Francisco encounter few (attractive) women in their daily lives. As a result, their behavior, once they do find themseves face-to-face with a reasonably good looking female, mirrors that of starving dogs.

Last Night in DC

On her last night in Washington, DC Jozefina and a friend went to a fashion show at the Swedish embassy. The show was for a Swedish brand of jeans called Nudies. Expectations were high. But, while the embassy has a great location at the Georgetown harbor and a rooftop with a view of the city, the male models in the show were not cute at all! They were short and had that tortured, punk look that perferctly matched the skinny jeans they were modeling. Luckily the night got much better later on, as some friends met up at a great new tapas place in Georgetown, called Bodega, where they proceeded to enjoy delicious tapas and pear martinis.

A Fun Event

One of the reasons Jozefina came to DC was to attend an event that the Bosnian embassy and the International Finance Corporation put on in celebration of a report on women in Bosnia's economy that Jozefina worked on. Tall, dashingly handsome, and charming, they are clear winners. Even with their good looks they remain gentlemen. They are also the best kissers. Since Greek women are not so hot, it should be fairly easy to score a hot Greek man on your travels.

WORST: Egyptians. Rude, ugly and disrespectful, they have no qualms with scamming and lying. Likely to wear dresses (aka long robes). We would be very hesitant to recommend them.

MOST OVERRATED: Italians. While they are the clear winners in our poll, the reality is far bleaker. They are short, scrawny, and loud. Billsfully unaware of their poor looks, they brim with self-confidence, a quality disturbingly familiar from our interactions with Balkan men.

Dogs of Hong Kong

Many pets are lovingly groomed by their owners. We hadn't pre-booked a hotel, but when we arrived at the hotel of our choice, they told us they were completely booked. Dejected, Kristina looked down to her luggage, only to realize that her laptop bag was missing and was still in the taxi.

We got a taxi receipt from the airport officials that included the cab driver's name and number (Thanks Thailand's board of tourism!), so we started our panicked investigation efforts. The cab driver would not answer his cell phone. While Kristina broke out in tears, her customary response to crisis situations, Jozefina engaged the non-English speaking bell boy. Around then, the hotel owner arrived in his Mercedes Benz, and offered his help. He enlisted the hotel security, got us a room, and soon we had the staff of 6 people helping us out.

A citywide announcement regarding the lost laptop was made via satellite radio, hotel security was furiously contacting authorities on their cell phones, and we were being escorted to the police station to file a report. On the way to the police station, our security escort turned around and announced that the laptop was on its way back to the hotel. Upon our arrival to the lobby, all the hotel staff seemed informed of our incident and was giving us the thumbs-up. Also, we were upgraded to the executive suite for our 'trouble.'

The Asia Hotel staff was incredibly helpful and caring, and we could not recommend the hotel more should you ever travel to Thailand.

We're (Finally) Leaving Egypt

Predictably, our flight from Cairo has been delayed, and we're stuck at the airport. But we found no classes offered to the public. We tried our luck at a belly dancing store in Luxor, but Khalid, the young boy who worked there, could not think of anyone for us. An hour later, Khalid and his friend Ali caught up with us on the street and excitedly informed us that they'd found an instructor. If we would only spend the next couple of hours with them, they would take us to her later. We politely declined...

P.S. A tip to Egyptian tour agencies: belly dancing classes would be a very popular activity choice. You should start offering them!

Our Looks Are Not a Priority in Egypt

Looking good does not seem imporant to us in Egypt. Our make-up bags are stashed in the far corners of our luggage, and we have not used mascara in days. However, the various scams that abound here can make the trip quite stressful and anxiety inducing. So do not visit this country unless you are prepared to be accosted every other second. Never, ever believe anyone on the street who seems friendly, especially if they say "I want to help," "Where are you from," or "Excuse me, excuse me." Some examples of scams we've gone through:
- Our first 15 minutes in Cairo. We are looking for a bookstore and a friendly male offers to show us the way. But he leads us through many winding streets only to end up at his perfume store where he proceeds to try to sell us some potions that we later discover are bad for your skin.
- We are looking for the Egypt Air travel office to book our flights for Luxor but are intercepted by a concerned and friendly male who informs us that the office is unfortunately closed. He then personally escorts us to a travel agency which attempts to charge us twice the normal ticket amount.

P.S. The scams may also help explain why so many tourists here are confined within the safety of their tour buses and hotels and are never to be seen on the streets alone.

Valley of the Kings

In Luxor we visited the Valley of the Kings, the site of 63 royal tombs. But once we inspected the dingy lodgings with a bad shower and poor view, Jozefina made a comment to the owner that ensured we would not get even that.

We were just bemoaning our bad fate on a street corner when an Italian man on a vespa swooshed in. It was Salvatore, the owner of the colorful linen shirt boutique next door, who took us into his air-conditioned store and made some quick phone calls on our behalf. He then grabbed our luggage and carried it down some steep stairs to a room with the most incredible view of the beach and the harbor below. Here are the top 4:
1. Tanning: shriveled brownish-orange skin is in vogue.
2. However, despite many many cappuccinos, we have not managed to stay up past 11pm. In Italy the clubs seem to get going around midnight. Tragically, we are also realizing that late 20ies call for different kinds of activities. While many of our peers are pushing child strollers down the corso, we are approached by 19-year-old expats and local scavenger boys asking us to join them for pub crawls.

Passport Disaster

In an effort to update you all on our whereabouts, we stopped by an internet cafe in Rome near the Vatican. In Italy you are required to present your passport to the merchant to use the internet, which Kristina did.

Later on, we stopped by another store and Kristina pulled out her passport, only to find in horror a chunky Australian woman's face staring at her from what was supposed to be her passport. As usually, she panicked and started crying while Jozefina - who's been in charge of the map and directions - had to backtrace and run all over town to locate the internet cafe in hopes of getting the passport back. An hour later, Jozefina was back where Kristina had agreed to wait for her. Uncombed and with feet dirty from Rome traffic, Jozefina built anticipation by saying nothing and only staring at her sister meaningfully. Kristina spent this time in anxious anticipation and frequent follow-ups with the bride while sizing up the other single females - her competition. It was therefore no surprise that when the bouquet was finally tossed, Kristina - who'd taken off her heels in preparation - had elbowed away all the other females and ducked to catch the flowers by the floor despite no prior known athletic skills. Her sister was left in the background. Her bouquet victory of course signaled that she is next in line to get married. Our Senegalese cab driver had confirmed as much earlier in the day, proclaiming Jozefina unmarriable as long as she remains a world traveler.

We lost $$$$ in Vegas

Last night, after one happy couple made their relationship official, the twin spinsters decided to try their luck at the slot machines.
